abstract = "The purpose of this work is to propose a method to monitor
deforestation areas in a global scale. It is based on the method
used by PRODES Digital and DETER projects performed by INPE. The
availability of MODIS sensor data with moderate spatial and high
temporal resolutions is appropriate for this kind of study. The
MODIS high accuracy of georeferencing is the other important
characteristics to be considered in global monitoring. In this
method, the Linear Spectral Mixture Model is used to generate the
fraction images to reduce the data volume and also to enhance the
specific ground targets. For example, vegetation fraction can be
used for analyzing vegetation condition, soil fraction shows the
non vegetated areas, and shade fraction highlights the water
bodies, burned areas and also discriminates the forest and non
forested areas. Currently, this method has been proposed for
monitoring South American Amazonia (Panamazon project). The
preliminary findings of Panamazon project are presented showing
the feasibility of the proposed method for global monitoring. In
addition, some MODIS acquired over Africa countries in 2001, 2002
and 2006 show the intra and inter annual variations of land cover
that can be addressed by this proposed method.",
